Is biodegradable plastic the solution?


Articles made of plastics, from terrible shopping bags and trash bags, to bottles, pens, glasses, etc., are considered polluters and contaminants of rivers, lakes, oceans and beaches.

Recycling and awareness will never be enough to stop this pollution reaching alarming levels.
The solution lies in the large-scale manufacture of these materials with biodegradable plastic and strict laws prohibiting the manufacture of polluting plastic, especially shopping bags and garbage bags.

In addition to all the practicality and diversity of use it provides, plastic can now be environmentally friendly. Grocery shopping bags, trash bags, pens, plates, cutlery, glasses, diaper cover, plant pots, PET bottles and jars, as well as many other types of packaging, can gain degradability, biodegradability, compostability and / or water solubility if produced from inert additives or raw materials of plant origin.

Fortunately, there is already a company in Brazil that exclusively imports the raw material for the production of degradable plastic.

RES Brasil is an industrial representation, distribution and licensing company headquartered in Cajamar, São Paulo State.
The company supplies plastics factories additions which, added to ordinary plastics, make the end product naturally degradable. Therefore, the raw material is at least 97% national in the case of additive products. The additive represents a maximum of only 3% of the material, which does not harm local companies.

In other cases, the company distributes raw material of plant origin (biopolymers) for the manufacture of biodegradable, compostable articles. Other products may still be water soluble. As such, they are rapidly absorbed in nature and in some cases may even serve as manure and animal feed, eliminating landfill disposal (where it takes up to 100 years to decompose) and no longer polluting rivers, lakes and oceans.

The "green" plastic products, far from being just an ideal, are already in full manufacture in Brazil. About 600 tons of plastic packaging with this concept have been manufactured and distributed in Brazil since October 2003.

Explaining the additive action in a simplified manner, this additive reduces the size and weight of ordinary plastic molecular chains and weakens the bonds between the carbon and hydrogen molecules that make up the plastic, causing the material to begin to degrade under common environmental conditions when disposed of in the trash. Following degradation, the resulting small fragments will be more easily digested by naturally occurring bacteria and fungi.

The decomposition time can also be adjusted according to the purpose of the product. These properties do not alter any of the original and desirable characteristics of ordinary plastic.
Once the bonds between the carbon and hydrogen atoms in the additive plastic are broken, these atoms will bind to the oxygen atoms in the atmosphere, resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, the same substances that living beings exhale during Breath

Costs

Despite representing a small cost increase over ordinary plastic, the additive version still has a lower price than paper, an option used in the manufacture of bags by companies that prefer the material because it is 100% organic. Although environmentally viable, paper is more expensive because it is a renewable raw material.

With a likely good market responsiveness in "environmentally friendly and environmentally demanding" times, biodegradable plastic products are expected to be reduced in cost.

100% organic

In addition to the additive that weakens common plastic molecules made with polyethylene, polypropylene, BOPP, PET, PS, among others, RES Brasil brought to Brazil starch resins made mainly of cassava, corn or potato (non-transgenic), which result in 100% organic plastic.
The resulting film deteriorates by the action of microorganisms in contact with the soil, in contact with organic waste and in composting and landfill environments, the so called dumps, over a period of 40 to 120 days, becoming an organic compound that Can be used as humus in fertilizer.
Another raw material represented by the company is intended for the manufacture of water-soluble plastic, based on polyvinyl alcohol that crumbles in contact with water without leaving toxic or harmful residues. The main application of this material is in the packaging of detergents, disinfectants and powder soaps that can be thrown directly into the washing machine or dishwasher and the toilet.

As we can see, there are many alternatives to the conscious use of plastic, it is enough that companies invest in this alternative and that consumers give preference to these products at the time of purchase.
